Have you ever looked back on an amazing dinner or night out and thought…
I had such good time last night spending time with my friends and family.
The restaurant was beautiful! I’d totally love to go there again.
Buuuuuut I didn’t order a very healthy meal.
And now I feel completely awful because I fell off track with my diet.
I probably gained 5 pounds! Ugh!
So I’m going to be super strict with my food choices this week to try to offset my bad meal.
And every morning I’m doing extra cardio to work off the extra calories.
Sound familiar?
Of course I’ve said or thought a version of this a time or two myself, but now I know better than to try to over exert myself and under eat my way out of a ‘bad’ meal. This route always backfires on me because I get so completely ravenous from trying to offset my ‘bad’ choice that I wind up binging on anything and everything I can get my hands on.
And why would I want to overshadow such a great night out with thoughts about bad nutrition? Because now, this formerly fun-filled night has a Negative Nancy hanging over it. And it diminishes the great memory of that night.
So why do we think like this anyway?
I believe a majority of it comes from what we see in the media. Women are constantly encouraged to eat less, weigh less, and workout more. So many women I know are always on some sort of diet, and they’re at the gym for 2-3 hours! I’m sorry but I have things to do, people to take care of, and a life to live!! I cannot handle that much gym time! And then there are all those Ate it, Negate it articles in magazines aren’t helping the matter. They reinforce the idea that you can out exercise unhealthy nutrition; that there exists some rule that says if you aren’t 100% perfect with your diet you need to punish yourself for it. But it’s time for that to stop. It’s time to get out of our minds that just because we had an extra cookie or handful of chips or a glass of wine, we have to run an extra mile and starve. There is a bit of wiggle room in your diet to let go. Because let’s face it, no one has ever been or ever will be perfect! And you don’t need to be to get results.
