I love #gooooooals!!!
Yes, I love goals, that’s no secret. I think they are key in maintaining excitement with fitness and nutrition over the long term. And while my goals have changed over the years, the methods behind reaching them have not.
I’m often asked what my secret is to staying on track. And besides always choosing a goal that excites me, there are a lot of other tricks that have helped me make my goals a reality. And today I’d like to share three of them with you!
But, I want to first point out that if a goal does not reflect what you value in life, you won’t fight for it when things get tough. And if you don’t have fun with your goals and it doesn’t make you happy, the goal then becomes a form of punishment. And no one sticks to anything if they view it as punishment.
How to Make Your Goals a Reality Tip # 1 – Give it a “1-2” Punch
We all have these giant “to do” lists on notepads or in the “notes” section in our cell phones, or on 75 little Post-its. That’s just too overwhelming and scary, and often leads to a stand still. So if you feel stuck, instead I want you to focus on ONE thing you can do right now to help you get unstuck? Can you return a phone call? Respond to an email? What can you do right now? And then, brainstorm TWO things you can do daily to help you get closer to your goal. As Aristotle said, “We are what repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act, but a habit.” Now who’s argue with Aristotle? So make sure your daily habits align with your goals. RECAP: 1 thing you can do right now to get you moving forward and 2 things you can do on a daily basis to get your closer to your goals.
How to Make Your Goals a Reality Tip # 2 – Share your Goals
If you share your goals, it will make you more accountable to reach them. Don’t be shy! Tell your friends what you’re going to do with CONVICTION and then take ACTION!
How to Make Your Goals a Reality Tip #3 – Make a “To Don’t Do” List
No offense, but I’m pretty confident there are things you do daily that you really DON’T need to do. I love social media, but do you need to scroll through Instagram and get caught up from the last 12 weeks? Do you need to watch a marathon of Orange is the New Black, or go through your Facebook page and comment on every single post? Are those REALLY going to help you reach your goals? Probably not.
But there’s more to this concept. What about all the tasks you do that aren’t your strong points? Can you find a way to delegate them? It was life-changing for me when I started paying some one to format my workout programs for me. And she made them WAY more beautiful than I ever could! It was SO worth the money, time, and headache to to let some one who loves that kind of stuff handle it! Then I have more time to do what I love to do and less worry about what I don’t.
What is something that you would love to stop doing? (Realistically speaking here. I would love to stop doing dishes, but reality says I need to.)
